How to get cited in AI search: the 2026 playbook.

Intro

A buyer wants someone who does what you do. They don’t open Google and scan ten links any more. They ask ChatGPT, or Perplexity, or they read the AI answer sitting above Google’s results. The engine names two or three businesses. If yours isn’t one of them, you didn’t lose the deal, you were never in the room.

We’ve covered what AI search optimisation is and the difference between AEO and GEO. This piece is the next step down: the actual work. How do you get your business named in those answers, what does the current research say moves the needle, and what did we learn running the audit on our own site.

Here’s the honest framing before we start. Nobody can promise you a citation, the same way nobody could ever promise a number-one ranking. But the signals that correlate with getting cited are now well documented, and most South African businesses aren’t acting on a single one of them. That’s the opening.

Key takeaways

  • Getting cited and ranking on Google are now two separate contests. Only about 38% of AI-cited pages rank in the top 10 for the same query.
  • AI engines lift self-contained answers. Put the answer in the first sentence under a clear, question-shaped heading, before any setup.
  • Specifics win. Cited text is far more likely to use definitive language and hard numbers than hedged, vague copy.
  • Consistency and trust matter as much as the page. Brand authority and a presence across several sites are the strongest predictors of citation.
  • Different engines cite differently. Perplexity rewards recency, AI Overviews lean on page-one results, and Reddit’s weight varies wildly between them.
  • The fastest results come from structural fixes. We saw it ourselves: we scored zero on our own buyer prompts before fixing the basics.

What does getting cited in AI search actually mean?

Getting cited means an AI engine names your business, or quotes your page, as part of the answer it gives a user. It’s the AI-era version of being the result someone clicks, except the user often never clicks at all. They read the answer, see you named as a source, and that’s the impression.

The important shift is that this is no longer the same job as ranking. For years the goal was a high position on Google’s page of links. Now an answer engine reads the web, picks the sources it trusts, and writes its own response. A 2026 analysis of AI Overviews found that only about 38% of the pages cited in the answer also ranked in Google’s top 10 for that query. Ranking still helps, because it gets you in front of the crawler, but it stopped being the finish line. Being quotable is the finish line.

So there are two questions worth separating. What makes an engine pick your source, and what do you physically change on your site and beyond it to become that source. The rest of this is both.

How do AI engines decide which sources to cite?

They cite sources they can read cleanly, verify independently, and trust. Recent studies trying to reverse-engineer citation behaviour keep landing on the same short list of signals.

Brand authority comes out as the strongest single predictor of whether a source gets cited, ahead of older signals like backlink counts. Close behind it is presence across several independent platforms: a business that shows up consistently on its own site, in directories, on review sites and in third-party articles gives the engine multiple agreeing sources, and agreement breeds confidence. On the page itself, content broken into clear, self-contained chunks of roughly 50 to 150 words gets cited far more often than the same information buried in long unbroken prose. And recency matters more than it ever did for blue links: most AI crawler activity targets content published or updated within the last year.

One more finding is worth pulling out because it changes how you write. When researchers compared cited text against uncited text, the cited passages were nearly twice as likely to use definitive language rather than hedged, qualifier-heavy phrasing. Engines pass over “this may sometimes help in certain cases” and lift “this does X”. Say the thing plainly, then back it.

How do you actually get cited? The steps that work.

You earn citations by making your content the cleanest answer to a real question, then making your business easy to trust across the web. In order of what pays back fastest:

  • Answer the question first, in plain prose. Open each section with a heading phrased as the real question, then answer it in the first sentence or two before any context. One study found roughly 55% of AI citations come from the top 30% of a page, so the answer can’t be buried at the bottom. Aim for a tight 40 to 60 word capsule an engine can lift whole.
  • Be specific and use numbers. Adding concrete statistics and naming your sources measurably lifts how often content gets cited. “Returned 9.25 times the investment in 26 days” beats “delivered great results” every time, for a reader and for a machine.
  • Keep your business details identical everywhere. Your name, services and location should match across your site, your Google Business Profile and every directory. This is entity consistency, and it’s what lets an engine be sure which business it’s talking about. Inconsistent details make you a risk the engine routes around.
  • Add structured data. FAQPage and Organisation schema hand a machine a clean, labelled version of your content. It’s a standard search engines already read, and it makes your answers easier to categorise and quote.
  • Check that AI crawlers can reach you. GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and the rest have to be allowed in robots.txt. Some hosts and CDNs quietly changed their defaults to block AI bots, and a blocked bot means you’re invisible to that engine no matter how good the page is. This is the first thing we check, because it’s the cheapest miss to fix.
  • Earn mentions off your own site. The single hardest signal to fake is other sources agreeing about you. Directory listings, review profiles, a guest article, an industry roundup that names you. You can’t buy your way into trust, but you can steadily build the footprint that creates it.

Notice what isn’t on that list. An llms.txt file isn’t there, because the engines don’t read it. Chasing it is the kind of checkbox that feels like progress and moves nothing.

Do ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI cite the same way?

No. The foundations overlap, but each engine has its own habits, and knowing them changes where you put effort.

Perplexity is the recency hawk. It strongly favours content published or refreshed in the last year, which means a “last updated” date and a quarterly refresh of your key pages genuinely helps you there. ChatGPT’s live web layer rewards comprehensive, well-structured pages and leans less on classic authority metrics than you’d expect. Google’s AI Overviews still pull the large majority of citations from page-one organic results, so the SEO foundation feeds it directly. And the platforms disagree sharply on community content: Reddit shows up in a small share of ChatGPT citations but a much larger share on Perplexity and AI Overviews, so a brand that’s discussed in the right communities reads differently depending on who’s asking.

The practical takeaway is that you don’t optimise for one engine. You do the clean, consistent work once, then refresh for Perplexity, keep your organic rankings up for AI Overviews, and make sure you’re structured enough for ChatGPT to parse. The overlap is large, which is the good news.

How long does it take to get cited by AI?

Faster than SEO used to be, if you start with the structural fixes. The 2026 data shows a rough ladder by surface.

So if you want a quick read on whether the work is landing, watch Perplexity in the first fortnight. The slower, more durable wins come from the trust signals that take a month or more to feed through. This is also why “we added schema last week and nothing happened” isn’t a verdict. You’re early in the ladder, not done.

How do you know if its actually working?

You build a prompt set and check it on a schedule, the same way you used to track keyword rankings. Write down the ten or fifteen questions a buyer would ask before choosing someone like you. Run them across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Record whether you appear, and where. That share-of-answers number is your scoreboard.

We know this works because we ran it on ourselves. We built an AI search readiness audit, pointed it at our own site, and the result was humbling: across the buyer prompts we tested, we were cited zero times. Our structured data was thin, our business details weren’t fully consistent across the web, and we hadn’t done the basics we tell clients to do. So we fixed them. We added Organisation schema with our real review rating, phone number and verified profiles, tightened our entity consistency, and cleaned up the machine-readable layer. The point isn’t that we’re special. It’s that the gaps were ordinary, the kind almost every site has, and they were fixable in an afternoon once we could see them.

What does this mean for a South African business?

It means the window is open wider here than in the US or UK. The local field of well-structured, citation-ready content is thinner, so there’s less competition for the engine’s trust on a given question. A Johannesburg business that gets the answer-first content, entity consistency and schema right now earns AI visibility faster than a competitor in a crowded English-language market would, simply because fewer local rivals are doing the work.

We’re seeing the demand arrive locally too. Established clients we already run search for are now asking, in plain terms, how to show up when a buyer asks an AI engine instead of typing into a search bar. It’s stopped being a future-tense conversation. The businesses that move while it’s still early get a head start that compounds, because the trust signals take months to build and reward whoever started first.

The bottom line

Getting cited in AI search isn’t mysterious, and it isn’t a growth hack. It’s the discipline of being the clearest, most trustworthy, most consistent answer to a real question, in a format a machine can lift. Answer first, be specific, keep your details consistent, add clean schema, let the crawlers in, and earn mentions elsewhere. Then test your prompts every month and watch your share of answers move.

We learned the value of that the honest way, by failing our own audit and fixing it. If you want to know where your site actually stands, our AI search service runs the same diagnostic on your business and tells you straight what’s worth doing. Tell us where you are and we’ll show you what an AI engine sees when someone asks for a business like yours.

Questions.

How do you get cited in AI search?

You get cited by giving AI engines a clear, self-contained answer they can lift, backed by signals they trust. In practice that means answering the question in the first sentence under a plain heading, keeping your business name, services and location consistent everywhere, adding FAQ and Organisation schema, making sure AI crawlers aren't blocked, and earning mentions on other sites the engine already rates.

Is getting cited the same as ranking on Google?

No. They're now two different contests. Research in 2026 found only about 38% of pages cited in AI answers also rank in Google's top 10 for the same query. A page-one ranking helps you get found by the crawler, but structure and extractability decide whether your text gets quoted.

How long does it take to get cited by AI?

Structural fixes show up fastest. Studies in 2026 saw answer-first rewrites and FAQ schema reflected in Perplexity within about 2 to 7 days, ChatGPT within 7 to 21 days, and Google AI Overviews and Claude within 14 to 45 days. Reputational signals like review-site presence take 30 to 90 days to feed through.

Do ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI cite the same sources?

Not always. The fundamentals overlap, but each engine weights signals differently. Perplexity leans hard on recent content, ChatGPT favours comprehensive well-structured pages on its live web layer, and Google AI Overviews still pull most citations from page-one results. Reddit is cited far more often on Perplexity and AI Overviews than on Gemini.

How do I know if my business is being cited by AI?

Ask the engines the questions your buyers ask, and write down whether you appear. Run the same prompts monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and track your share of answers over time. That prompt set is your scoreboard, the same way keyword rankings used to be.
