What is schema markup? 5 straight answers for 2026
Intro
If you’ve had an SEO proposal land in your inbox lately, there’s a good chance it mentioned schema markup. Probably alongside a number. Something like “sites with complete schema are 2.7 times more likely to be cited by AI”.
That number, and the others like it, don’t appear to come from anywhere. I went looking for the study behind them and found nothing. No sample size, no method, no link.
Schema markup is still worth doing. It’s just worth doing for the reasons that hold up, not the ones that sell. Here’s what it actually is, what it actually does, and the parts of the pitch you should push back on.
Key takeaways
- Schema markup labels the things on your page so machines can read them properly. It doesn’t change what your visitors see.
- It is not a ranking factor. Google has said so directly.
- It makes you eligible for rich results, which can lift click-through rate on normal Google listings.
- There’s no solid evidence it gets you cited in AI search. Google’s docs say no special markup is needed for its AI features.
- Google removed FAQ rich results in May 2026, so FAQPage schema no longer earns anything there.
- Still worth adding, for rich results and for stating clearly who your business is.
What is schema markup?
Schema markup is code you add to a page that tells a machine what the content on it means. A price gets labelled as a price. An address gets labelled as an address. Your opening hours get labelled as opening hours instead of just being a line of text that happens to mention Monday.
It comes from schema.org, a shared vocabulary that Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex all agreed to back. The usual format is JSON-LD, a block of code that sits in the page’s source and never appears on screen.
The distinction that matters: your page already says you’re open until five. A human reads that fine. Schema is how you say the same thing in a way software can’t misread.
What it looks like in practice
Here’s the shape of it. A jewellery shop marks up a product page so the price, the currency and the review score all carry labels: Product, Offer, priceCurrency: ZAR, AggregateRating. Google can now pull that into the search listing as a price and a row of stars, rather than guessing from the text.
That’s the whole mechanism. Labels in, eligibility out.
Does schema markup help you rank higher?
No. Structured data is not a ranking factor, and Google’s Search Advocate John Mueller has confirmed that publicly. Adding schema to a page does not move it up the results.
What it does is make the page eligible for rich results. Those are the enhanced listings you already recognise: star ratings, prices, stock status, recipe times, the extra sitelinks under a brand. Google’s full list of supported types is in the Search Central documentation.
Eligible is the honest word. Google decides whether to show a rich result, and often doesn’t. But when it does, you’re taking up more space on the page than the listing above you, and more people click. The ranking hasn’t changed. The traffic has.
Does schema markup get you cited in AI search?
Probably not, and nobody has shown that it does. Google’s own guidance is blunt about it: “there’s no special schema.org markup you need to add” to appear in its AI features, and structured data “isn’t required for generative AI search”. That’s from Google’s AI optimisation guide, updated this month.
It’s worth sitting with that for a second, because it contradicts most of what’s written about schema and AI right now.
The best evidence we have points the same way, and it’s recent. In May 2026 Ahrefs published a study of 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD schema between August 2025 and March 2026, measured against 4,000 matched control pages. Adding schema moved AI Mode citations by 2.4 percent and ChatGPT by 2.2 percent, both statistically indistinguishable from zero. Google AI Overviews citations went slightly down, by 4.6 percent.
Here’s the part worth understanding, because it explains where the myth comes from. The same research found that AI-cited pages are nearly three times more likely to carry schema than pages that don’t get cited. Both things are true at once. Cited pages tend to have schema, and adding schema doesn’t get you cited.
That’s a correlation doing an impression of a cause. Sites with clean structured data are usually sites that are well maintained, well written and already trusted. The schema is a symptom of a site being looked after, not the reason an engine quotes it.
The academic study people reach for when they want to sound rigorous, the Princeton GEO paper, found real gains from adding citations, statistics and quotations to content. It didn’t test schema markup at all. Not as a variable, not once.
So when a proposal quotes you a precise multiplier for schema and AI citation, ask where it came from. In my experience the answer doesn’t arrive.
What does seem to affect AI citation
The evidenced levers are about the content itself, not the code around it:
- Self-contained answers. A paragraph that makes sense lifted out of the page is a paragraph an engine can quote.
- Specifics and numbers. Concrete claims with sources beat confident vagueness.
- Freshness. Recently updated pages get pulled more often.
- Consistent identity. Your name, location and services matching everywhere they appear.
Notice that only the last one touches schema, and even there the schema is one signal among several. We wrote up the fuller version of this in how to get cited in AI search.
Which schema types are actually worth adding?
Start with the ones that earn something. Most businesses need four.
| Schema type | What it’s for | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Organization / LocalBusiness | Who you are, where you are, how to reach you | Yes, always |
| Product with Offer and Review | Price, stock and ratings on shop pages | Yes, if you sell online |
| Article | Author and dates on blog posts | Yes, low effort |
| BreadcrumbList | Navigation path in the listing | Yes, low effort |
| FAQPage | Question and answer pairs | No Google rich result since May 2026, other engines still read it |
That last row surprises people. Google restricted FAQ rich results to a handful of government and health sites back in 2023, then finished the job on 7 May 2026, when FAQ rich results stopped appearing in search altogether. HowTo rich results went the same way on desktop. If someone is still selling you FAQ schema as a Google win, their information is out of date.
We still emit FAQPage on this site, including on the post you’re reading. Not for Google. Other engines parse it, it costs nothing, and the questions are genuinely useful to a reader either way. That’s a different argument from the one that was being made two years ago, and it’s worth being clear about which argument you’re making.
What we found when we audited ourselves
Last month we ran our own AI search readiness audit on redandwhite.agency, the same one we run for clients. We scored 46 percent. Not ready. Zero out of the seven buyer prompts we test returned us as a source.
We had schema on the site at the time.
One site is not a study, and I’m not going to present it as one. The Ahrefs numbers above are the actual evidence. But it did make the point concrete for us: a site with Organization schema, a clean entity setup and a healthy technical build still came back zero for seven. What was missing was the content layer, answers written to be extractable and enough genuine first-hand material for an engine to have a reason to quote us.
So we fixed both, and we didn’t pretend the schema half was the part that mattered. We haven’t re-run the audit yet to isolate what each change contributed, which means I can’t tell you schema moved the number. Anyone who tells you they can, on a change set that touched several things at once, is guessing.
What our own schema actually looks like
Since it’s easy to recommend structured data and never show any, here’s what runs on this site.
One consolidated block typed as both Organization and ProfessionalService, anchored at a stable identifier so every other bit of schema can point at it. Inside it: the logo as an ImageObject, a region-aware phone number, founding date, physical address with coordinates for the Cape Town office, areaServed covering South Africa, the UK and the US, knowsAbout for the services, sameAs links to every profile we own, both founders as named Person entities, and our Google Partner and Microsoft Advertising Partner memberships as ProgramMembership.
Then a site-wide WebSite block, a BreadcrumbList generated from the URL on every page that isn’t the home page, Article on posts like this one, and FAQPage where there are real questions on the page.
The reason for the detail isn’t to show off the code. It’s that this is all schema is for. Every one of those properties answers a factual question about who we are. None of them is a trick to get quoted by ChatGPT.
The check most schema audits get wrong
One practical note from doing this work. If your site is built on a JavaScript framework, the schema in the page source and the schema a search engine actually renders can be two different things. Frameworks inject types that were never in the raw HTML, and they silently drop ones that were.
Checking one layer gives you a false reading in either direction. We look at the raw HTML, the rendered page, and a validator, then take the union. A single-fetch check that says you’re fine often isn’t evidence that you’re fine.
Google’s Rich Results Test and the Enhancements reports in Search Console are the two free tools worth knowing. Both tell you what Google can actually read, which is the only opinion that counts.
How we handle schema for clients
Schema sits inside our SEO work as technical hygiene, not as a headline. It’s a fixed early task: get Organization or LocalBusiness right, mark up whatever commercial templates exist, wire breadcrumbs, validate it, then move on to the things that actually shift traffic.
We score it in our AI search audits at roughly a tenth of the total, deliberately kept separate from content clarity and answer structure. That weighting is a judgement call, and it exists so that a site can’t score well on machine-readability while its content still fails to answer anything. We also keep a list of stats we refuse to put in client documents, including several of the schema-and-AI numbers doing the rounds, because we couldn’t trace any of them to a study.
If you’ve been quoted a big number for a schema project, the useful question isn’t whether schema is worth doing. It’s what else is in the scope. Schema alone is a few hours of work on most sites. If the quote is large, the value is somewhere else in the proposal, and it should be named.
The bottom line
Schema markup is real, it’s cheap, and you should have it. Add Organization or LocalBusiness, mark up your products if you sell online, put Article on your posts, wire your breadcrumbs, validate the lot, and stop thinking about it.
What it won’t do is lift your rankings or buy you a mention in ChatGPT. Google has said both plainly. When a proposal attaches a confident percentage to schema and AI visibility, ask for the source. The pitch usually gets quieter.
If you want to know what your site’s structured data actually says about you, and whether the rest of your SEO is holding up, get in touch and we’ll take a look at the real thing rather than the version a single tool reports.
Questions.
What is schema markup in simple terms?
Schema markup is extra code you add to a page that labels what things on it actually are. It tells a search engine that a number is a price, a string of text is an address, and five stars is a review score. The words on the page don't change. Only the machine-readable labels around them do.
Does schema markup help you rank higher on Google?
No. Google has confirmed structured data is not a ranking factor. What it does is make a page eligible for rich results, the star ratings, prices and extra links you see on some search listings. Those can lift your click-through rate, which is worth having, but the ranking position itself doesn't move.
Does schema markup get you cited in AI search?
There's no good evidence that it does. Google's own documentation says there is no special schema.org markup you need to add to appear in its AI features. A May 2026 Ahrefs study of 1,885 pages found that adding schema produced no meaningful change in citations on ChatGPT or Google AI Mode, and a slight drop on AI Overviews.
Is schema markup still worth adding in 2026?
Yes, for two reasons that have nothing to do with AI hype. Rich results can improve your click-through rate on normal Google listings, and Organization schema is how you state plainly who you are, where you operate and what you do. Both are cheap, permanent wins.
Which schema types actually matter for a small business?
For most South African businesses: Organization or LocalBusiness for who you are, Product with Offer and Review if you sell online, Article on blog posts, and BreadcrumbList for navigation. Don't add FAQPage expecting a Google rich result, since Google stopped showing those in May 2026, though other engines still parse it.
