SEO vs AI search: what changes, what doesn't.

Every few years something is declared the death of SEO. Voice search was going to do it. So were apps. Now it’s AI: people ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview a question and read the answer instead of clicking through to a website, so why bother ranking at all?
It’s a fair question with a calmer answer than the headlines suggest, and we answer it directly in is SEO dead in 2026?. Most of SEO didn’t change. A layer got added on top. Here’s how to tell which is which.
What stays the same?
The fundamentals are doing exactly what they always did, because AI engines are built on the same web that search engines crawl.
Technical health still matters. A site that’s slow, broken or impossible to crawl is invisible to an AI engine for the same reason it’s invisible to Google.
Content that answers real questions still wins. The engines reward pages that genuinely help, whether the reader arrives by clicking a link or reading a generated summary.
Authority still counts. Being referenced by sources that are already trusted makes both Google and an AI engine more confident in recommending you.

What do AI engines add?
The new layer is about being readable and quotable by a machine that’s assembling an answer rather than ranking a list.
Structured answers: content written so a clear answer sits right under a clear question, in plain prose the engine can lift without misreading you.
Entity consistency: your business details, name, services, location, matching everywhere they appear online, so the engine knows which business is which and trusts what it finds.
Machine-readable summaries: structured data and an llms.txt file that hand the engine a clean version of who you are, instead of making it infer everything from your layout.

Doesn’t AI search just steal my traffic?
Sometimes, yes. If someone’s question is fully answered in a generated summary, they may not click. But the people who do click after seeing you cited arrive far more convinced, because an engine they trust just recommended you. You trade some low-intent clicks for higher-intent ones and for being the name in the answer. For most businesses that’s a good trade, and it’s not optional anyway, since the behaviour is already changing.
One roadmap for both
The mistake is treating AI search as a separate project with its own budget and its own agency. It isn’t. The technical work, the content, the authority building, these serve both audiences at once.
