Why is my website not ranking on Google?

Intro

“Why is my website not ranking on Google?” is one of the most common questions we get, and it almost always arrives with the same frustration behind it. You built the site, you’ve waited, and you’re still nowhere to be found when you search for what you do.

Here’s the part most guides skip. A website that isn’t ranking rarely has one big dramatic problem. It usually has a handful of smaller ones stacked on top of each other, and they need checking in a specific order, because the early ones hide the later ones.

Guess in the wrong order and you’ll spend weeks fixing something that was never the real issue.

So this is the diagnostic we actually run when a business comes to us stuck at the bottom of the results. Work through it top to bottom and you’ll usually find the leak well before the end.

Key takeaways

  • A site that isn’t ranking is rarely one big fault. It’s usually several small ones, and the order you check them in matters.
  • Start with indexing. If Google hasn’t indexed the page, nothing else you do can move it, and you’re optimising a page that doesn’t exist as far as search is concerned.
  • If the site is only a few weeks old, it may simply be too soon. Ranking takes months, not days.
  • Most “indexed but not ranking” cases are a content or intent problem, not a technical one.
  • Keyword choice beats effort. Chasing terms your site can’t yet win burns months for nothing.
  • In 2026 you can rank and still get no clicks, because AI Overviews answer the question before the searcher scrolls. That’s a different fix.
  • A ranking on its own isn’t a result. Leads are. Measure through to enquiries or you’re flying on a vanity metric.

Why is my website not ranking on Google?

A website usually isn’t ranking for one of six reasons: it isn’t indexed, it’s too new, its content doesn’t match search intent, its keywords are too competitive for its authority, a technical fault is blocking it, or it’s ranking fine and losing the click to an AI Overview.

The trick is checking them in that order, because a problem near the top makes everything below it impossible to read.

First, a definition that clears up half the confusion. Indexing and ranking are not the same thing. Indexing is Google finding your page and adding it to its library. Ranking is Google deciding, out of everything in that library, that your page deserves to show up for a given search. A page can be perfectly indexed and still rank nowhere, and the fix for each is completely different.

Is your site even indexed yet?

Start here, every single time. If Google hasn’t indexed your page, it cannot rank, and every hour spent tweaking titles and content is wasted on a page search engines can’t see.

The check takes two minutes. Search Google for site:yourdomain.co.za. If your pages come back, you’re indexed. If nothing shows, or key pages are missing, that’s your answer and your first job. The usual culprits are a stray noindex tag left on by a developer, a robots.txt file blocking crawlers, or simply a new site Google hasn’t discovered yet because nothing links to it.

Google’s own Search Console will tell you exactly why a page isn’t indexed and let you request indexing directly.

We see this more than you’d expect after a site redesign. A noindex that was correct on the staging site quietly ships to the live one, and rankings the business spent years building vanish overnight. If your traffic fell off a cliff right after a rebuild, check this before anything else.

We wrote a full website redesign SEO checklist for exactly that reason, because the launch-day slip is so common and so costly.

Is it simply too soon?

Sometimes nothing is broken and the site just hasn’t had time. Ranking is not instant, and a brand-new domain sitting low after two weeks is normal, not a fault to fix.

Here’s the rough shape of it. Indexing happens within days to a couple of weeks. Ranking for easy, low-competition terms can follow in a few more weeks. Anything genuinely worth having, the searches your buyers actually make, tends to take three to nine months to climb, and competitive categories can run to a year.

New domains also earn Google’s trust slowly, so a young site is fighting uphill no matter how good the content is.

This matters because “give it time” is both a real answer and the easiest excuse in the business. So we treat it as a box to tick, not a place to start.

If the site is a few weeks old, patience is genuinely part of the plan. If it’s a year old and still nowhere, time isn’t your problem and you can move down the ladder.

Does your content actually match what people are searching for?

This is where most “indexed but not ranking” sites are stuck. If Google can see your page but won’t rank it, the content usually doesn’t answer the search as well as the pages above you do. Google has become very good at reading intent, and a page that reads like a general brochure loses to one that answers the exact question.

Two faults show up again and again. The first is thin content, a page that mentions a topic without really answering it, so there’s nothing for Google to reward. The second is an intent mismatch, where you’ve written about your product but people are searching for a solution to a problem, and the words never line up.

Traffic that doesn’t convert is a vanity metric, and a ranking on its own isn’t a result, so the aim is to match the search that actually brings a buyer.

This is the work that pays. When we took on Moon Investments, a South African bullion dealer in a category thick with competition, we didn’t chase vague high-volume terms. We went after the highest-intent searches in the category and shaped the content to own them, and the flagship result was a page-one ranking for “gold bars”.

That ranking keeps earning long after any ad budget stops, which is the whole point of doing it properly.

Are you targeting keywords you can realistically win?

Keyword choice beats effort every time. A small or newer site trying to rank for a term dominated by national brands will lose for months no matter how good the page is.

Simply because it doesn’t yet have the authority to compete on that battlefield.

The fix is to pick fights you can win now and grow into the harder ones. That usually means more specific, lower-competition searches: “aluminium windows Cape Town” rather than “windows”, “paving suppliers Johannesburg” rather than “paving”. These bring fewer searches but far more of the right buyers, and they’re winnable while you build the authority to chase the bigger terms later.

There’s a smarter version of this that we lean on constantly. Paid search tells you which searches actually convert, then SEO goes and wins those same searches permanently. We ran exactly that play for Royal Paving, a paving and grass supplier with showrooms in Johannesburg and Cape Town: paid proved the intent, and the organic work went after the terms that were already turning into sales, so the site earned more of its own visibility instead of renting all of it.

For Handles Inc, an online hardware store, the same logic meant organic picked up the category and product searches the ads would otherwise have paid for twice.

Does your site have the authority to compete?

Authority is Google’s read on whether other people trust you, and without enough of it a good page still won’t rank against established competitors.

The two big signals are backlinks from reputable sites in your field and clear, consistent evidence that you’re a real, expert business.

On links, quality has beaten quantity for years and the gap is only wider now. One link from a respected site in your industry is worth more than fifty from random directories, and a pile of spammy links can actively hold you back.

Alongside that, Google leans hard on experience and expertise signals, what it calls E-E-A-T, so first-hand knowledge, a named author, real credentials and genuine reviews all feed the same trust score. If your competitors read as more established and more trusted, they’ll usually outrank you even with a thinner page, which is why authority sits this high on the ladder.

Is a technical problem holding you back?

Once content and authority are sound, technical health is what’s left, and it’s rarely the first cause but often the last blocker. The three that move the needle are speed, mobile experience and crawlability.

Slow pages lose both rankings and people. Google uses page experience as a ranking input, and a page that takes more than three seconds to load bleeds mobile visitors who never wait around to convert. Mobile matters especially in South Africa, where a large share of searches happen on a phone on mobile data, so a site that’s heavy or awkward on a small screen is failing most of its audience.

Crawlability rounds it out: a clean site structure and an accurate sitemap make sure Google can actually reach and understand every page you want ranked. None of these three will carry a weak page on their own, but any one of them can quietly cap a strong one.

Are you ranking but losing the click to AI Overviews?

Here’s the 2026 twist most guides miss entirely. You might already be ranking well and still getting almost no traffic, because Google’s AI Overview answers the question at the top of the page and the searcher never scrolls to your link. That’s not a ranking problem, it’s a visibility problem with a different fix.

The old goal was to rank first. The new goal is to be the source the AI answer quotes, because a page cited inside an AI Overview earns clicks while an uncited page-one link often doesn’t. We’ve watched this play out on South African search directly: rankings holding steady while clicks quietly flatten as the Overview absorbs the easy questions.

The response isn’t to chase a higher position you may already have, it’s to make your content extractable, answer questions in plain prose under clear headings, and earn the citation.

If your rankings look healthy but the traffic doesn’t match, this is worth a proper look. We go deeper on the diagnostic in what Google AI Overviews do to SA traffic and on the fix in how to get cited in AI search.

The bottom line

If your website isn’t ranking on Google, resist the urge to start fiddling with the last thing you read about. Work down the ladder instead: confirm you’re indexed, rule out that it’s just too soon, make the content match real search intent, target keywords you can actually win, build the authority to compete, clear any technical blockers, and check you’re not simply losing the click to an AI answer.

The real cause is nearly always in there, and nearly always cheaper to fix than to paper over.

And keep the finish line honest. A ranking is a means, not the result. The number that matters is enquiries, so measure through to leads rather than admiring a position that isn’t sending you any.

If you’re weighing up whether any of this is worth paying for, we’ve been straight about what SEO costs in South Africa and whether SEO is still worth doing at all in 2026.

If you’d like us to find out why your site isn’t ranking and fix the cause rather than guess at it, see how we run SEO or get in touch and we’ll take a look.

Questions.

Why is my website not ranking on Google?

It's usually one of a handful of causes, best checked in order: the page isn't indexed, the site is too new, the content doesn't match what people are actually searching for, the keywords are too competitive for your site's current authority, or a technical fault is holding it back. In 2026 there's a sixth possibility, that you're ranking fine and an AI Overview is intercepting the click before it reaches you.

Why is my website indexed but not ranking?

Indexed means Google can see your page. Ranking means it decided your page is the best answer for a search. Indexed-but-not-ranking almost always comes down to content that doesn't match the searcher's intent, a keyword too competitive for your site's authority, or a page too thin to compete. It's a quality and relevance gap, not a visibility one.

How long does it take for a new website to rank on Google?

Indexing takes days to a few weeks. Ranking takes longer: expect weeks for low-competition terms and three to nine months for anything worth having, sometimes up to a year for competitive categories. If your site is only a few weeks old and sitting low, the honest answer is often that it's too soon, not that it's broken.

Why is my website ranking on Google but getting no traffic?

In 2026 an AI Overview often answers the query at the top of the page, above the blue links, so a page-one ranking can still lose the click. Check whether an AI Overview appears for your key searches and whether your site is the source it cites. If it isn't, the fix is being citable, not ranking higher.

Should I hire an SEO agency if my website isn't ranking?

It's worth it once you've confirmed the basics: that the site is indexed and it isn't simply too early. A good agency runs this diagnostic, fixes the real cause rather than guessing, and ties the work to leads instead of just rankings. Below about R2,000 a month, though, cheap SEO rarely does enough real work to move anything.
